Privacy Policy

How The British Network collects, uses and protects personal information through this website.

Last updated: 30 September 2026

Who we are

This website, thebritishnetwork.com, is run by The British Network, a free information guide for British people living in, or moving to, the United States. This policy explains what personal information we collect through the site, why, who we share it with, how long we keep it, and the choices you have.

To contact us about this policy or about your personal information, send us a message using our Ask a question form, include your email address, and tell us it is a privacy request.

What we collect

We only collect what you choose to give us through the forms on this site, plus limited technical information needed to run it.

  • Starter guide: the guide is a free download, and we do not ask for any details to download it. We do not currently send a newsletter. If you joined our earlier mailing list before 30 September 2026, we hold the first name and email address you gave us, and we will not email you without asking first.
  • Directory enquiry form: your name, email address, the kind of help you need, your message, which listing you were looking at, and a reference number. If your enquiry is about money and finance, you can also give a phone number, say whether you would like a call and when suits you. Phone details are never collected for other topics.
  • Money Check: the quiz shows your results on screen without sending anything. If you then choose to send them, we receive your answers to the ten questions (such as where you are in your move, whether you have UK pensions or assets, your US immigration status, your US state and a savings range), the topics shown to you, your name and email address, and, if you choose, a phone number and when to call. We also record a priority level based on the savings range you selected, to help us follow up.
  • Ask a question form: your question, your email address if you give one, the page you were on, anything you searched for on the site, and a reference number.
  • Advertise form: your business name, your name, email address, phone number, website, location, British connection, business category, your message and how you heard about us.
  • Analytics, only if you accept: see Cookies and analytics below.
  • Technical information: our website host automatically logs limited technical details, such as your IP address and browser type, to keep the site running and secure.

How we use it

  • To reply to your enquiry or question, and to call you if you asked us to.
  • To suggest a suitable specialist after a Money Check, if you sent us your results.
  • To connect you with a provider listed in our Directory, if you asked us to.
  • To deal with advertising enquiries from businesses.
  • To understand which pages and topics are useful, so we can improve the guide.
  • To keep the site secure and to meet any legal obligations.

For visitors covered by UK data protection law, we rely on your consent for analytics, the Money Check and sharing an enquiry with a provider, and on our legitimate interests for replying to questions you send us and running the site safely.

When we share your details

  • Directory enquiries: if you ask to be connected to a provider listed in our Directory, we pass the details you gave us to that provider only, so they can respond. They are a separate business, and once they have your details their own privacy policy applies.
  • Money Check: your answers and contact details are kept by The British Network. We will not pass them to anyone without asking you first.
  • Service providers: Netlify hosts the website and stores form submissions, and form submissions are also sent to our email inbox so we can reply. Google provides analytics, only if you accept analytics cookies. These providers handle data on our behalf. The pound-to-dollar rate on the homepage is loaded from a free public exchange-rate service (frankfurter.dev, using European Central Bank reference rates), so your browser connects to it and it can see your IP address, as any website you visit can. We send it nothing else.
  • The law: we may disclose information if we are legally required to.

We do not sell or rent your personal information, we do not use it for advertising, and businesses that advertise on the site do not receive any information about our visitors.

Where your information is stored

The British Network operates from the United States, and our service providers store data in the United States. If you are in the UK, this means your information leaves the UK. We only use established providers with recognised security standards.

How long we keep it

  • Enquiries, Money Check results, questions and advertising enquiries: deleted 12 months after our last contact with you, unless we are still in touch about your enquiry or the law requires us to keep them longer.
  • Earlier mailing list sign-ups: deleted within 12 months of sign-up, unless you tell us you would like to hear from us.
  • Analytics: Google keeps detailed analytics data for 2 months, the shortest setting available.

Your rights

Wherever you live, you can ask us what information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it, and you can withdraw your consent at any time, for example by changing your cookie choice.

UK visitors: under UK data protection law you also have the right to restrict or object to how we use your information and to receive a copy of it. If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, you can complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).

US residents: some US states, such as California, give residents rights over their personal information, including knowing what is collected and asking for it to be deleted. We do not sell personal information or share it for advertising.

To make any request, use our Ask a question form, include your email address and say it is a privacy request. We will reply within one month.

Cookies and analytics

This site uses Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages people find useful, so we can improve the guide. It only runs if you click Accept on the cookie message. If you click No thanks, no analytics cookies are set.

When it is switched on, Google Analytics sets cookies (their names begin with _ga) and collects information such as the pages you visit, how long you stay, the type of device and browser you use, and your approximate location (city or region). We have turned off Google's advertising features, so this information is not used to show you adverts.

Your choice is remembered in your browser. You can change it at any time using Cookie settings at the bottom of every page. Google explains how it uses this data at policies.google.com.

Children

This site is written for adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 16. If you think a child has sent us their details, contact us and we will delete them.

Keeping your information safe

The site is served over a secure, encrypted connection, form submissions are stored with our hosting provider, and access is limited to the people who run The British Network. No website can be completely secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect what you send us.

Links to other websites

This guide links to many other websites, including official government pages and the businesses in our Directory. We are not responsible for how those sites handle your information, so check their own privacy policies.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time, for example if we add a new feature or service. The date at the top of this page shows when it last changed.
