Banking and account opening
Options a Brit can realistically use around a move. Rules on ID, tax numbers and eligibility change often, so always confirm the current requirements with the provider before you rely on them.
US banks
Chase (JPMorgan Chase Bank)
A mainstream US bank you can usually open in a branch soon after arrival. A foreign passport works as primary ID, and an ITIN is accepted in place of an SSN. Branch practice varies, so call ahead.
Type: US bank · no green card needed · ITIN accepted
Bank of America (Newcomer onboarding)
One of the more newcomer-friendly big banks, with a dedicated international onboarding process. It explicitly accepts a Foreign Tax ID Number, so a US ITIN or SSN is not required. In-branch appointment needed.
Type: US bank · foreign tax ID accepted
Online accounts
Wise
A regulated money service, not a bank. Hold and move GBP and USD cheaply at the mid-market rate and get US account details, a useful bridge before a full US bank account. Some features may later ask for an SSN or ITIN.
Type: US fintech · no SSN or ITIN needed to open
Currency transfer and FX
For moving larger sums between pounds and dollars, such as a house deposit, savings or a pension lump sum. Specialist currency firms can often offer a better rate than a high-street bank. Check the firm is regulated where you live, and compare the total cost (the rate plus any fees) on the day you send.
Worldwide Currencies
UK foreign exchange specialist for personal and business international payments in more than 130 currencies, with a dedicated consultant rather than an app-only service. Authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority (registration 525361). In the United States, its payment services are provided through Visa Global Services Inc., a licensed money transmitter.
Location: London, UK
Xe

Send money to more than 190 countries, hold dollars, pounds and other currencies in one account, and set rate alerts so you can move money when the rate suits you. Use it to get your bearings, then use an attorney for anything that matters. Free, and it is the rule book everyone else is interpreting.

Family & Education
Families arriving from the UK need to understand a very different schooling system and find trusted care for children.
Public school district guidancePrivate and independent schoolsBritish curriculum and international schoolsChildcare and daycareNannies and au pairsTutoringColleges and admissions advisersSpecial educational needs support
Official starting points rather than businesses. American schooling is organised locally, so where you live decides your options far more than it does in the UK.
GreatSchools
The most used independent guide to American schools, with ratings, test results and parent reviews searchable by address. The practical use for a newcomer is checking school quality before you choose where to rent or buy, because in most of the US the address determines the school.
Coverage: United States, nationwide
US Department of Education
The federal department's own site, useful for how the American system is structured, what is compulsory, and how public, charter and private schools differ. Day to day enrolment is run by your local school district, not federally, so use this for orientation and your district for action.
Coverage: United States, federal
Study in the States
Run by the Department of Homeland Security, covering student visas, school transfers for children on dependent visas, and how immigration status interacts with education. The place to check before assuming a visa category allows a child to attend a particular school.
Coverage: United States, federal
Insurance & Protection
Health, life and car insurance for Brits in the US, a market that works very differently from the UK.
Health insurance brokersLife insurance advisersDisability and income protectionHome and renters insuranceAuto insurancePet insuranceTravel insurance
Health insurance
There is no NHS in the US, so health cover is needed from day one. If you are under 65 and newly arrived, the usual route is an employer plan or the federal marketplace. Medicare starts at 65.
The Perl Path
Independent Medicare broker run by Aidan Neshite, covering plan selection across Medicare Advantage, Medigap and Part D prescription plans, with more than 70 plans across 14 carriers. Relevant if you are 65 or over, or helping a parent or spouse who is. Note that most newly arrived Brits will not yet qualify for Medicare, which generally needs 40 quarters of US contributions or a qualifying period of residency.
Location: Las Vegas, Nevada. 702-503-8344
HealthCare.gov
The official federal health insurance marketplace, and the usual starting point if you do not have cover through an employer. Moving to the US counts as a qualifying life event, which opens a special enrolment period rather than making you wait for the annual window. Free to use, and it is the government's own site.
Coverage: United States, nationwide
Life insurance and protection
BlackPoint Risk Management, LLC
Life insurance and protection planning for British families in the US. Cover written in the US while UK policies, pensions and estate exposure on the other side are taken into account, rather than looked at in isolation. Cross-border estate planning is the part most general US advisers miss.
Location: Coral Gables, Florida, serving clients nationwide
Licence: California Agency Insurance License #6012021
Car insurance
The problem here is not finding an insurer, it is that your British driving record does not travel with you. Most US carriers treat a newly arrived driver as though they have never driven, which is why first-year premiums are so high. A few carriers will credit documented overseas experience, and several of the biggest names routinely decline newcomers altogether in the first twelve months.
Mercury Insurance
One of the few carriers that will accept a foreign driving licence and give credit for documented overseas driving experience, which can make a substantial difference to a first-year premium. Bring a letter of experience or no-claims proof from your UK insurer. Not available in every state, so check your own before relying on it.
Coverage: Selected US states
Progressive
National, writes in every state, and will generally quote a newly arrived driver where several of the larger household names will not. Not the cheapest once you have a US record, so treat it as a way in rather than a long-term home, and re-shop after twelve months of clean US driving.
Coverage: United States, nationwide
Pets & Animals
Bringing a pet from the UK involves paperwork and vaccinations, and every household needs local animal care.
VeterinariansPet relocation and import specialistsPet insuranceGroomersBoarding, daycare and dog walkersTrainers
Bringing a pet from the UK to the US is mostly paperwork and airline logistics rather than quarantine, but the rules on rabies vaccination and approved airlines changed recently and are strictly enforced. These firms handle the whole move door to door.
PetRelocation
Long established international pet moving specialist, handling flights, crates, health certificates, import paperwork and ground transport at both ends. Used to the UK to US route and to the CDC rules on arriving dogs.
Location: United States, moving pets worldwide
Air Animal Pet Movers
A veterinarian-owned US pet moving company, IATA registered, arranging flights and the documentation that goes with them. Worth a second quote alongside any UK-based firm, as the pricing on transatlantic moves varies widely.
Location: United States, moving pets worldwide

Everyday Setup & Admin
The small but essential administrative steps of arriving that do not fit elsewhere, from getting a Social Security number to translating documents.
Social Security number guidanceDocument translation and certificationPostal, mailbox and forwardingVoter and civic registration guidanceMobile phone and SIM setup
Social Security Administration
The official source for getting a Social Security number, which you will need before almost anything else: a bank account, a driving licence, a phone contract, a job. Apply in person at your local office, and book the appointment rather than turning up. Beware any site charging a fee, because applying is free.
Coverage: United States, federal
Lingua Int
Translation and interpretation, run by Eric Van Hout. Useful where a US institution wants a certified translation of a British or other European document, such as a marriage certificate, a birth certificate or a qualification.
Location: Spain, working internationally
Prime Notary Service
Mobile notary run by Amy Gui. Americans notarise far more documents than the British are used to, and a mobile notary will come to you. Note that a US notary is not the same as a UK notary public: for documents going back to the UK you may need an apostille as well.
Location: Las Vegas and Henderson, Nevada
United States Postal Service
Change of address, mail forwarding and PO boxes. Worth doing early, because a US address history is one of the quiet inputs into your credit file. The Premium Forwarding and mail hold services are useful while you are between addresses.
Coverage: United States, nationwide
Vote.gov
The official federal site for voter registration, listed here for completeness. Only US citizens may register and vote, and registering when you are not eligible is a serious matter with immigration consequences. If you naturalise, this is where to start.
Coverage: United States, federal
